Why Grip Strength Matters More Than You Think

Grip strength isn't just about having a firm handshake.

In recent years, hand grip strength has become one of the simplest and most powerful measures of overall health and physical function. A quick squeeze on a hand dynamometer can provide valuable information about muscle strength, recovery, injury, and even long-term health.

Why do physical therapists measure grip strength?

Grip strength provides objective data that can help us:
  • Track recovery after hand, wrist, elbow, or shoulder injuries
  • Monitor progress following surgery
  • Evaluate nerve injuries
  • Assess overall upper extremity strength
  • Measure improvements during rehabilitation
  • Establish a baseline for future comparison
Unlike simply asking, "Does it feel stronger?", a dynamometer gives us precise numbers that allow us to measure real improvement over time.

Grip strength is linked to overall health

One of the most fascinating discoveries in rehabilitation research is that grip strength reflects much more than hand function.

Large studies have found that individuals with lower grip strength tend to have:
  • Higher risk of cardiovascular disease

  • Peripheral nerves
  • Cervical spine

Some researchers have even suggested that grip strength deserves consideration as another "vital sign" alongside blood pressure, heart rate, and body weight.

Can you improve your grip strength?

Absolutely.
The good news is that grip strength responds well to training and rehabilitation.
Depending on your goals, treatment may include:
  • Progressive strengthening exercises
  • Resistance training
  • Farmer's carries
  • Dead hangs
  • Wrist and forearm strengthening
  • Post-surgical rehabilitation
  • Nerve mobility exercises
  • Functional lifting activities
As your overall strength improves, grip strength often improves alongside it.

When should grip strength be tested?

Grip strength testing can be valuable if you have:
  • Hand or wrist pain
  • Tennis elbow or golfer's elbow
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Shoulder injuries
  • Arthritis
  • Post-operative hand or upper extremity surgery
  • Neurological conditions
  • General concerns about strength or aging
The test takes less than a minute and provides objective information that helps guide treatment.
